Custody and Visitation Classes: The Office of the Family Law Facilitator in Santa Barbara offers free classes on custody and visitation issues. If you want a Family Law Facilitator to help you with custody and/or visitation issues, you must start the process by attending the 2-part class. Current custody class schedule is available here. The first part of the class is entitled “Custody and the Law Class.” It explains what “custody and visitation” is, what the court looks at in creating the first orders for custody and visitation, and what the court looks at in changing an existing order for custody and visitation. The class explains your legal options in addressing custody and visitation problems. Registration starts at 10:00 a.m. and the class ends at 12:00 noon.  The class is free.

The second part of the class is entitled the “Legal Forms Class.” It provides procedural instruction on how to go to Family Custody Services mediation and on what legal forms and pleadings are needed in order to go to court regarding custody and visitation issues.  Registration starts at 1:15 p.m. and the class ends at approximately 3:30 p.m.  The class is free.

The classes are held once approximately every 4 weeks. Participation is on a first come, first serve basis. You go to Family Court Services at the appointed time in order to register on the day of the class. Please call (805) 882-4660 for the class schedule and for further information.

  • Starting or Responding to Your Divorce (Workshop 1)
    First Thursday of each month 8:30 a.m. to noon
     
  • Financial disclosures and orders (Workshop 2)
    Second thursday of each month 8:30 a.m. to noon
     
  • Final judgment paperwork (Workshop 3)
    Third thursday of each month 8:30 a.m. to noon

FREE classes are available to assist you! The Family Law Facilitator leads classes for people who are representing themselves in matters before the Family Court. Current class schedule is available here.

Custody and Visitation Class
You will learn about the legal aspects of custody and visitation and what is
important to the judge in making court orders. You will learn how to complete the legal forms necessary for you to be able to go to Court to address Custody and Visitation issues.

Starting Your Divorce (Dissolution I)
You will learn about the basics necessary to file for Dissolution of Marriage or
Legal Separation. You will learn how to complete the Petition and other legal forms necessary for you to begin the divorce process.

Financial Aspects of Divorce (Dissolution II)
You will learn about the financial information required in all Dissolution actions
You will learn how to complete the Income and Expense Declaration, Schedule
of Assets and Debts and related financial documents.

Finalization of Divorce (Dissolution III)
You will learn about compliance with the various requirements necessary to
finalize your divorce. You will learn how to complete the Judgment of Dissolution and other documents necessary for the Court to finalize your divorce.

  • Do not bring children.
  • The Classes are offered in English only at this time. If you do not speak
    English, please bring an interpreter with you.
  • Bring a pen and all your relevant legal papers.

It is recommended that you obtain the appropriate package of forms from the Clerk’s office (Modification package, Divorce I, Divorce II or Divorce III) and complete those forms as much as possible prior to class
